{"id":2729,"date":"2026-03-24T10:03:03","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T09:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/?p=2729"},"modified":"2026-03-24T10:04:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T09:04:15","slug":"czy-polskie-wino-jest-premium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/en\/2026\/03\/24\/czy-polskie-wino-jest-premium\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Polish wine premium?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Expert voice from the Polish Wines and Wineries Fair in Pozna\u0144<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Saturday, during the Polish Wine and Vineyards Fair in Pozna\u0144, a lecture titled \u201eIs Polish wine premium?\u201d was held, led by Ewa Relidzy\u0144ska \u2013 an expert specialising in premium segment wines and champagnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right from the start, Ewa pointed out the apparent contradiction contained within the question itself. \u201ePremium Polish wine\u201d still sounds like an oxymoron to many. And yet, market reality shows something entirely different \u2013 an increasing number of consumers are willing to pay prices for Polish wines comparable to those for Burgundy, Champagne, or renowned German regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Premium \u2013 so what exactly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key point of the lecture was to clarify the very concept of \u201epremium\u201d. As Relidzy\u0144ska points out, the biggest mistake is equating it solely with price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Premium does not mean \u201eexpensive\u201d.<br>An expensive product can be average, and a premium product doesn't have to be the most expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most apt definition she proposed was the statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201ePremium is not a price. It's the value a customer is willing to accept.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift in perspective \u2013 from price to value \u2013 allows us to better understand what the premium segment truly is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To clarify the subject, the expert identified four key pillars of premium wine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the foundation. Premium wine must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>repeatable in terms of quality,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>balanced,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flawless.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It's not about a one-off effect, but about year-on-year stability. Harmony is key \u2013 the absence of dominant alcohol, aggressive acidity, or harsh tannins. It is balance that builds elegance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Origin (terroir)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Premium must have a clearly defined origin. It is the terroir \u2013 soil, climate, aspect, and microclimate \u2013 that gives the wine its unique character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not technology or marketing, but the place and its potential that determine the authenticity of a product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. History and storytelling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The modern consumer no longer just buys wine \u2013 they buy an emotion, an idea, and a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, history doesn't have to be hundreds of years old. It can be young, but it must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>authentic,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coherent,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consciously built.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Limited availability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Premium wines are not mass-produced. They are characterised by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>small-scale production,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>year group selection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited distribution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They are not available \u201eeverywhere\u201d, which builds their uniqueness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2025-03-22_wino_fotobueno_-1005-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2025-03-22_wino_fotobueno_-1005-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2025-03-22_wino_fotobueno_-1005-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2025-03-22_wino_fotobueno_-1005-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2025-03-22_wino_fotobueno_-1005-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2025-03-22_wino_fotobueno_-1005-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2025-03-22_wino_fotobueno_-1005-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Poland \u2013 a new player or a return to roots?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most interesting threads of the lecture was the historical perspective on Polish winemaking. As the speaker emphasised, Poland isn't starting from scratch \u2013 it's returning to its tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first vineyards were established as early as the 10th century, mainly around monasteries. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, winemaking flourished \u2013 wine was a common drink, and vineyards stretched from Ma\u0142opolska to Silesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The downfall was brought about by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>climate change,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wars,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>competition from imported wines,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>phylloxera.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Second World War, the tradition almost disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The revival only began in the 80s, with a real boom occurring after 2000 and Poland's entry into the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>it works ok. 600 winnic,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>small, family-run projects are dominant,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The climate is conducive to wines with high acidity and freshness,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poland is experiencing the greatest development in winemaking history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-21_wino_fotobueno_-1201-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2732\" srcset=\"https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-21_wino_fotobueno_-1201-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-21_wino_fotobueno_-1201-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-21_wino_fotobueno_-1201-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-21_wino_fotobueno_-1201-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-21_wino_fotobueno_-1201-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/domwhisky.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-21_wino_fotobueno_-1201-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Poland vs. the premium segment \u2013 a confrontation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ewa didn't shy away from difficult questions. On the one hand, she pointed out arguments suggesting that Polish wine could be premium:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arguments for\u201e<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Small-scale production<\/strong> boutique feel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Craftsmanship<\/strong> \u2013 personal commitment from the producers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unique climate<\/strong> \u2013 a cool style of wine, much sought after today<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Authenticity<\/strong> \u2013 true, often family stories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The potential of sparkling wines<\/strong> \u2013 natural acidity as an advantage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arguments \u201eagainst\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High price vs. quality perception<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low recognition of Poland as a wine-producing country<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inconsistent quality between manufacturers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A Brief Modern History<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These tensions are what define the current stage of development of Polish winemaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples that change perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The speaker cited specific examples demonstrating that Polish wine can meet premium criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sparkling wines produced in Poland using the traditional method are equal in quality to their European counterparts, although they differ in style due to their terroir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solaris \u2013 often criticised \u2013 has become a symbol of Polish winemaking, much like Robert Lewandowski in football. It's a grape variety that has paved the way and built recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pinot Noir from Poland's cool climate gains a unique character, impossible to replicate in warmer regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, family vineyards, like Silesian, demonstrate the power of storytelling, where wine becomes a tale of people, place, and values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So... is Polish wine premium?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer isn't black and white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polish wine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Today can already be premium quality and local,<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>it has enormous global potential,<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>is in the process of building their identity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As Ewa Relidzy\u0144ska summarised:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201ePremium is a process, not a status.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poland is right now in this process \u2013 at a moment when history is being made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And although it's not always perceived as a premium wine country yet, the direction is clear. Polish wines are already appearing in Michelin-starred restaurants, and their quality is improving year by year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polish wine doesn't need to pretend to be Burgundy or Champagne.
