Talisker Distillery was funded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. It is located in the Isle of Skye, the largest and most northerly major island in the Inner Hebrides. Currently the distillery is owned by Diageo and equipped with five stills produces 2.7 million liters of spirit per annum. Talisker single malt was known only locally until 1988, when United Distillers (predecessor to Diageo) included 10 years old expression into original Classic Malts range. Here we got a very rare expression of Talisker 12 years old, bottled in the 1970s for the Italian market. Since the distillery used its own floor maltings until 1972 we are certain that whisky presented here was distilled from barley malted on site.
Nose: fruity, peaty and smoky, apricots, apples, lemon peel, notes of seaweed and sea breeze, hints of pepper and herbs and steaming cappuccino.
Palate: baked apples and pears, quince jelly, seaweed salad, pine needles, candied citrus peel, white pepper, notes of smoked salmon and peat.
Finish: long, with notes of sea breeze, seaweed, ginger, candied fruits, hint of camphor and whiffs of peat smoke.
