In 1969 Balblair Distillery was still under private ownership of Robert Cumming from Keith (Hiram Walker acquired Balblair the following year). Those days’ floor maltings were still in operation and the distillery malted its barley on site. The 1969 Vintage is a true whisky from the different era. It was released for the US market in 2012 and soon after for the rest of the world. The whisky spent 43 years in ex-bourbon rebuilt hogsheads and was bottled at natural strength of 41.4% abv. Only 999 bottles of this remarkable whisky were produced.
Nose: beautiful complexity, stewed apples, pears, caramel, honey, sweet spice, traces of mint and peat smoke.
Palate: rich and complex, fruity sweetness of apples, pears and oranges masterfully balanced with oak tannins, vanilla and distant smokiness.
Finish: extremely long, apple pie versus delicate oaky dryness.
