One day in 1962, a young man took a job at Balvenie Distillery. Probably few thought that this young man would grow into a legendary Malt Master whose career would span six decades and whose extensive knowledge and enormous creativity would attract the attention of whiskey connoisseurs worldwide. This young fellow’s name is David Stewart, the longest-serving Malt Master in the industry, and the edition presented here is dedicated to him. The whisky comes from European oak hogshead filled in 1962 (the year his career started) and, in 2023, produced only 71 bottles (our bottle bears number 43). On each bottle, next to David Stewart’s autograph, there is also (for the first time) the signature of Kelsey McKechnie, who, in 2018, at the age of only 26, became a Malt Master apprentice and an assistant to Mr. Stewart. The packaging resembles a work of art made from glass, gold, and brass. The tube casing was designed to reflect layers of memories from David Stewart’s career. Needless to say, it is the oldest expression of Balvenie single malt ever released. (Tasting note by Kelsey McKechnie.)
On the nose, the whisky has a mesmerizing array of autumnal aromas: lavender, heather, and bracken. Whilst rich toffee, roasted coffee, and beautifully layered oak dominate the palate. The flavor evolves with time revealing bursts of cloves, nutmeg, charred oak, and candied orange in an exceptional long-lasting finish.
