Oban 20 year old (Distilled 1961) Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice / 40%/
Connoisseurs Choice is an old whisky label from Gordon & MacPhail’s portfolio. It was a brainchild of George Urquhart, the second generation of the family that still owns G&M, and great whisky visionary. The range was introduced in 1968 when the majority of Scottish malt distilleries supplied their whiskies for blending industry without even taking effort to market them as single malts. Today, more than half a Century later, Connoisseurs Choice is still part of Gordon & MacPhail’s range and successfully competes with dozens of whisky labels. Here we have Oban distilled in 1961 from barley malted on site (Oban operated own floor maltings until 1968) and aged in oak casks for two decades.
Nose: very delicate, dusty second hand book store, wax, autumn leaves, herb garden, orange and lemon peel, nectarines, honey, touch of mint and hints of beef broth.
Palate: very light, mixed herbs, white pepper, ginger, cinnamon, licorice, green tea, tobacco, hints of sherry and oak.
Finish: not too long, with notes of mixed herbs and spices, oak tannins and hints of tobacco.
