Basil Hayden Toast Kentucky Straight Bourbon /40%/ – Basil Hayden’s Bourbon was introduced in 1992 along with Knob Creek and Baker’s as part of the original Jim Beam Small-batch Collection. The whiskey is named after one of Kentucky’s earliest distillers (called by his friends Old Grand-dad), who developed a bourbon recipe with high rye content. The Basil Hayden brand was extended in the new century with so-called ‘specialty whiskeys’ such as Dark Rye and Two by Two Rye. Basil Hayed Toast breaks from established practices – it falls in the straight bourbon category, but its mashbill is far from ordinary – 63% corn, 27% brown rice, and 10% malted barley. After being aged in new, charred oak barrels for a minimum of four years, the whiskey is transferred into toasted oak barrels for an unspecified time.
Nose: brown sugar, toffee, caramel popcorn, cinnamon, banana bread, orange peel, walnut shells, hints of fresh hay, toasted oak, and distant whiff of campfire smoke.
Palate: soft, toffee, butterscotch, caramel, sweet pastries, mocha, coconut flakes, sugared nuts, hints of vanilla and toasted oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of caramel, toffee, cinnamon, mixed nuts, dash of pepper and toasted oak.
