The Macallan 12 years old, Double Cask Lunar, The Year of the Pig / 43% / – In 2018 Macallan Distillery introduced new limited edition series commemorating Chinese New Year with the Year of the Dog. The Year of the Pig edition followed in February 2019 celebrating the Chinese New Year (5.02.2019 – 24.01.2020). Pig is the twelfth animal in Chinese zodiac and in Chinese culture pigs are the symbol of wealth. The box includes two bottles of the Macallan Double Cask featuring a specially designed label on which there is a pig, however one has to look really hard to spot it. The 12 years old whisky is a marriage of European oak and American oak casks. The American oak travels to Spain where it is seasoned with Oloroso sherry alongside European casks then both are transported to the Macallan distillery and filled with the new make spirit.
Nose: classic sherry cask nose, candied orange peel, raisins, butterscotch, honey, vanilla custard and delicate oaky and nutty notes.
Palate: pretty rich, oranges, bananas, touch of coconut, raisins, caramel, vanilla, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, candied ginger and oak.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of vanilla, milk chocolate, raisins, candied orange peel, nutmeg and oak.
