Scallywag Chocolate Speyside Blended Malt Limited Edition /48%/ – The Scallywag brand was introduced by Douglas Laing & Co. in the fall of 2013. It was a small batch bottling created exclusively with Speyside malts including Macallan, Mortlach and Glenrothes and bottled without age statement. While the standard version is a vatting of ex-sherry casks and first fill ex-bourbon barrels, the limited 2021 Chocolate edition is a vatting of Speyside malts aged exclusively in sherry wood. Scallywag the Chocolate Edition was bottled without chill filtration at 48% abv with an outrun of 3000 bottles. The name of the brand refers to the Laing family Fox Terrier, whose picture is featured on the label. (The word ‘Scallywag’ describes a person who behaves badly but in amusingly mischievous rather than harmful way).
Nose: distinctive sherry notes, chocolate truffles, raisins, prunes, red berries, brown sugar, toffee, nutmeg, hints of potpourri and oak.
Palate: milk chocolate, toffee, crème brûlée, maple syrup, nougat, prunes, black cherries, raisins, hints of cloves and black pepper.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of milk chocolate, caramel, dried fruit, cinnamon, dash of pepper and oak.
