Deanston 2008, 9 years old Brandy Cask Finish / 56,4%/ – Deanston Distillery was founded in 1966 but its buildings go back to 1785 and originally hosted a cotton mill (the vaulted weaving shed has been serving as a warehouse).
After few years of prosperity the distillery closed in 1982 and resumed production in 1990 after being acquired by Burn Stewart Distillers. Deanston is equipped with two pairs of stills and can produce 3 million liters of spirit per annum. The whisky is a main component of the Scottish Leader brand, which sells over 6 million bottles annually. Deanston 2008 presented here comprises whisky aged in white American oak barrels and finished in French brandy casks for two years. Bottled without chill-filtration and at natural strength of 56.4% abv in the summer of 2018.
Nose: lots of grapes and dried fruits, apricots, prunes, raisins, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, cocoa powder, hints of allspice and oak.
Palate: sweet and spicy, raisins, pears, apples, milk chocolate, toffee, honey, vanilla, white pepper, cinnamon and delicate oaky bitterness.
Finish: medium long, with notes of dried fruit, white pepper, hints of tobacco and oak.
