Port Charlotte 2013, 9 years old, PMC:01 /54,5%/ – Port Charlotte PMC:01, the sixth release of the Cask Exploration series from Bruichladdich, is a beautiful marriage of smokey Scotch single malt whisky and the highest quality French oak casks. It was created from spirit distilled in 2013 from 2012 harvested Concerto barley malted to specification of 40 ppm phenols, aged for the first four years in first fill ex-bourbon barrels, then transferred into Pomerol casks for additional five years. Pomerol, the smallest of all major Bordeaux wine appellations, is home to some of the finest red wines in the world. The wines are based on Merlot variety. The whisky was bottled at natural strength of 54.5% abv, of natural color and without chill filtration.
Nose: red fruits wrapped in peat smoke, raspberries, red currants, stewed pears, plums, vanilla, honey, marzipan, ginger, clove and hints of geranium.
Palate: peat smoke, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, Damson jam, salted caramel, milk chocolate, vanilla, candied ginger, dash of black pepper, and a whiff of sea breeze.
Finish: long, with notes of peat smoke, sea salt, red berries, chocolate, vanilla, honey, and toasted oak.
