Highland Park 15 years old Viking Heart /44%/ – Highland Park, founded 1798, is the older one of two distilleries currently working on Orkney. The distillery is equipped with two pairs of stills and produces 2.5 million liters of spirit per annum. The distillery produces malt on site (it covers 30% of the malt requirement) using young local peat. Within the last decade the brand sales increased by more than 100% to cross 2.2 million bottles mark in 2019. Highland Park Viking Heart 15 years old was created by master whisky maker Brian Motion, who selected predominantly sherry seasoned European oak casks and added just a few refill casks. The whisky is presented in ceramic decanter by Wade Ceramics inspired by old stoneware used in the past on Orkney to store whisky.
Nose: rich, heather honey, crème brûlée, orange peel, pineapples, cantaloupe, cinnamon buns, nougat, hints of vanilla and distant whiff of peat smoke.
Palate: distinctive sherry notes, candied orange and lemon peel, pineapple, sponge cake, raisins, vanilla, honey, marzipan, cinnamon, nutmeg and a wisp of smoke.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of honey, toffee, raisins, orange marmalade, cinnamon, sherried oak and sweet smoke.
