The Macallan 15 years old Fine Oak (Triple Cask Matured) /43% – In the late 20th Century Macallan was widely cherished for producing big, sherried whisky. The distillery even claimed employing exclusively sherry wood for maturation. In 2004 however, The Edrington Group, Macallan’s parent company, launched multi million-dollar campaign for Fine Oak series, range of Macallan single malts aged in combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The Macallan purists expressed their disappointment, while most of the whisky drinkers approached new range with confidence. All in all, Fine Oak series established itself quite well, giving different perspective for the Macallan malt. The 15 years old expression is aged three types of wood: Spanish and American oak seasoned with sherry and American oak seasoned with bourbon.
Nose: fruity and oaky, spring meadow, apricots, plums, raisins, oranges, vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate, hints of pepper and hay and pretty strong oaky notes.
Palate: smooth, apples, pears, oranges, raisins, toffee, vanilla, honey, roasted chestnuts, hints of cinnamon and pepper and oak.
Finish: pretty long, oaky and spicy, with notes of cinnamon, pepper, raisins and bitter orange marmalade.
