Glenmorangie 12 years old, Palo Cortado Sherry Finish /46%/– Glenmorangie Distillery is unquestionable pioneer, as well as a leader in finishing maturation. The company has been experimenting constantly and each year along with “everyday finishes” such as sherry (Lasanta), port (Quinta Ruban) and sauternes (Nectar D’Òr) releases new and unique expressions. The one presented here certainly falls into “unique” category. The whisky spent the first eight years in white American oak ex-bourbon barrels, then part of the batch was transferred into Palo Cortado sherry casks for additional four years (Palo Cortado sherry has the aromatic refinement of Amontillado combined with the structure and body of Oloroso). It is the first ever release of Glenmorangie finished in such casks.
Nose: rich and elegant, honey, toffee, vanilla, mulling spice, chocolate truffles, orange peel, cinnamon buns, roasted walnuts, and delicate oaky notes.
Palate: slightly oily, milk chocolate, toffee, raisins, plums, bitter orange marmalade, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, hints of ginger and salted nuts.
Finish: long, with notes of roasted nuts and almonds, milk chocolate, mulling spice, hints of leather and oak.
