The Macallan Rare Cask Black (1824 Master Series) /48%/ – The owners of Macallan Distillery, always famous for their love to sherry casks, this time they took a bit different approach from both ends – the whisky and its presentation. Macallan Rare Cask Black, part of the upper end of 1824 Series, was released in the fall of 2015 as Travel Retail Exclusive. It was sourced from about 100 ex-sherry casks made of American and European oak, which contained smoky batch(es) of Macallan. According to the distillery spokesman, “smoky Macallan is rare, there is very little in existence and once used these casks will be no more”. The whisky was bottled unchill-filtered at 48% abv and is presented in black opaque bottle.
Nose: lots of sherry characteristics, prunes, dried dates and figs, nutmeg, traces of cinnamon and cloves, touch of pepper, polished oak and gentle notes of peat smoke.
Palate: very rich, dried fruit sweetness, prunes, figs, raisins and apricots, perfectly balanced with nutmeg and oaky dryness, hints of cloves and a whiff of smoke.
Finish: long and fruity, with hints of spice and oak and subtle smokiness.
