Arran Distillery is located on the namesake island, just outside the village of Lochranza. It was founded in 1993 and started whisky production two years later. In the early 2000s the distillery released several expressions finished in various wine barrels. Here we have a unique bottling launched on November 22, 2005. After being aged in ex-sherry cask the whisky was transferred into a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Villa Gemma cask from the House of Masciarelli. The cask yielded 315 bottles at 56.9% abv. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a red Italian wine made from the Montepulciano grape in the Abruzzo region of east-central Italy.
Nose: winey and peppery, cherries, cranberries, grapes, prunes, hints of candied ginger and lemon grass and toasted oak.
Palate: pretty spicy, pepper, ginger, dash of nutmeg, cherries, apples, plums, dried herbs and subtle oaky bitterness.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of pepper, ginger, dried herbs and stewed fruit.
