Finlaggan has been a favorite topic of many whisky forums for quite some time. The brand is owned by The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, which keeps very tight lid on the identity of its source, ensuring consumers that the whisky always comes from one distillery. Some forum participants believe that Finlaggan is in fact an alternative version of Lagavulin, others put their money on Caol Ila, Ardbeg or Laphroaig. They all agree however, that the brand offers great value for the money. The early 2016 brought two new expressions, Port Wood Finish and Sherry Wood Finish. The former spent last few months in ex-port casks.
Nose: peat smoke, maple cured smoked bacon, dark chocolate, toffee, red berries and traces of rosehip marmalade.
Palate: strong peaty notes, toffee, raspberries, cranberries, raisins, hint of white pepper and touch of leather.
Finish: medium long, peaty and slightly ashy with notes of red fruit and chocolate.
