Scallywag The Chocolate Edition 2023 /48%/ – The Scallywag brand was introduced by Douglas Laing & Co. in the fall of 2013. It was a small batch bottling created exclusively with Speyside malts including Macallan, Mortlach and Glenrothes, and bottled without age statement. While the standard version is a vatting of ex-sherry casks and first fill ex-bourbon barrels, in 2018 the company introduced the Chocolate Edition made of whiskies matured in ex-sherry casks that were picked for their chocolate-rich profile. The initial release was limited to 300 bottles and sold on the spot. Here we have the sixth batch of Scallywag Chocolate Edition released in 2023. The whisky was aged in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and bottled at 48% abv, of natural color and without chill filtration with an outrun of 4200 bottles.
Nose: distinctive sherry notes, honey, toffee, chocolate truffles, raisins, blackberries, cinnamon, nutmeg, hints of potpourri and oak.
Palate: chocolate-coated cherries, toffee, caramel, nougat, plums, forest berries, raisins, marzipan, hints of clove and cinnamon.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of chocolate, caramel, pralines, mocha, red berries, cinnamon, vanilla and oak.
