New bourbon for tasting in Warsaw
Rhetoric 20 years old, Orphan Barrel Bourbon Whiskey / 45% – In the late 2013 Diageo announced The Orphan Barrel Whisky Project, a collection of unique whiskeys “found” in the company warehouses. The first two expressions released in March 2014 were Kentucky Bourbons Old Blowhard 26 years old and six years younger Barterhouse. Rhetoric 20 years old followed in June. Rhetoric was distilled in the old and new Bernheim Distillery, aged in Stitzel-Weller Distillery (owned by Diageo but silent) and bottled in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Its mashbill includes 86% corn, 6% rye and 8% malted barley (an original formula of I.W. Harper Bourbon). Diageo plans to release Rhetoric every year until 2019 with the final bottling to be 25 years old.
Nose: pretty strong oaky notes, caramel, cinnamon, toasted nuts, old leather, cigar humidor, hints of baked apples and plums.
Palate: strong (but not overwhelming) oaky notes, hints of prunes and dried cherries, caramel, cloves, black pepper and touch of dark chocolate.
Finish: medium long, oaky, with delicate caramel notes, shortly taken over by pepper, bitter chocolate and oaky dryness.
