There are some premieres that are awaited like a new season of a favourite TV series - with excitement, curiosity and a bit of impatience. In the world of rum, such a tradition has become the annual appearance of the Planteray Single Casks. These are not simply limited editions. They are a testament to the craftsmanship, passion, courage and love of experimentation for which Maison Ferrand's products are internationally renowned.
In 2025, Planteray returns with a collection that not only shows how far the art of rum ageing can be taken, but also how beautiful collaboration between the different worlds of distillation can be.

How is Single Cask rum made? The three stages that define the Planteray style
The process that Planteray uses is one of the most distinctive features of their style. Aging takes place in three stages, each of which contributes something different to the final aromatic profile.

1. tropical ripening
The rum is aged in its country of origin, in bourbon barrels. The tropical climate speeds up the process and enhances the aromas. This is the base on which further stages are built.
2. second stage in France
The rum goes to Cognac, where it is aged in Ferrand cognac barrels. This stage gives it smoothness and elegance, acting as a kind of 'bridge' between the intensity of the tropics and the later experiments.
3. finale in unique barrels
The final phase is the most creative moment of the whole process. The Single Casks rums are matured in casks of:
- sherry PX,
- madera, marsala, pauillac,
- white port,
- peated whisky from Islay,
- apricot liqueur,
- Chardonnay wine.
This is where each rum takes on an individual character. The results can be surprising, but always thoughtful.
Single Casks 2025 - a full collection of ten casks
This year's edition features ten interesting proposals, including three from the category of Barrel Swaps - which are rums that have been matured in casks sourced from friendly whisky distilleries. This produces effects not usually found in rums.
Barrel Swaps - when rum meets the world of whisky
Paraguay 2014 - Arbikie Highland Rye Cask (46.5%)
Rum from Paraguay has gained character from the rye Scotch whisky cask. The result is a combination of tropical sweetness and dry, cereal notes.
Trinidad 2016 - Armorik Oloroso Whisky Cask (44.3%)
Maturation in a Breton single malt barrel gives the rum accents of figs, chocolate and a slight saltiness. A very interesting interpretation of the Trinidad.
Fiji 2009 - Kilchoman Peated Whisky Cask (47.7%)
A distinctly smoky proposition. Highly estery rum combined with peaty Islay cask creates an intense, distinctive, smoky profile.
Other rums in the 2025 edition
- Dominican Republic 2014 - Pedro Ximenez Sherry Cask (48.8%)
- Barbados 2017 - Marsala Wine Cask (48.5%)
- Jamaica 2013 - Madeira Wine Cask (52.0%)
- Fiji 2017 - Pauillac Wine Cask (48.3%)
- Panama 2019 - White Port Cask (44.6%)
- Barbados 2018 - Apricot Liqueur Cask (48.6%)
- Paraguay 2018 - Chardonnay Wine Cask (49.1%)
The set is very diverse, ranging from the heavier, sweet accents of PX sherry to the fresher, fruity notes resulting from finishing in wine or liqueur casks.
Why is Single Cask a one-of-a-kind experience?
There are many limited editions in the world of premium spirits, but Single Cask is a level above.
There is no repetitiveness or massiveness here. There are no serial blends. There is no possibility of 'doing it again'.
It's like being locked in a bottle momentwhich will not happen again.
Jonas Indesteege, Global Rum Prestige Collection Brand Manager, puts it beautifully:
"Each of these casks is chosen to offer the recipient something extraordinary - a once-in-a-lifetime, honest experience."
And indeed - these are rums that we want not just to drink, but to revisit their history, to discover them slowly, to celebrate them.

Summary: The 2025 edition is one of the most interesting to date
Planteray is showing that it can still surprise, perhaps as never before - with its variety of casks, ideas for finishes and collaborations with whisky distilleries.
The Single Casks 2025 series is a great example of how rum can be both traditional and highly experimental.
If you enjoy discovering new flavour profiles or are looking for a bottle that has its own story, this year's edition is definitely worth a look.
