Bunnahabhain Stiùiredair/ 46,3% – Under the ownership of Distell Group all Burn Stewart distilleries – Deanston, Tobermory and Bunnahabhain – greatly upgraded their product range. Whiskies are now bottled without chill-filtration and with alcohol content elevated to 46.3% abv. Stiùiredair is the most recent addition to the Bunnahabhain range (summer 2017). It is fairly young whisky distilled from un-peated malt, aged in first fill and refill sherry casks and bottled without age statement. Apparently the new expression supposed to ease pressure on the dwindling stocks of the company flagship, Bunnahabhain 12 years old. Stiùiredair is the old Gaelic name for Helmsman.
Nose: delicate sherry notes, salted peanuts, roasted chestnuts, caramel, honey, dark chocolate, raisins, hints of lemon peel and distant whiff of sea breeze.
Palate: slightly spirity, white pepper, roasted chestnuts, cappuccino, salted nuts, hints of cinnamon and clove and touch of hay.
Finish: medium long, malty, with notes of dark chocolate, roasted nuts and sea breeze.
