Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon / 47%Heaven Hill Distillery launched Elijah Craig Bourbon in 1986. The bourbon is named after reverend Elijah Craig, arguably the creator of bourbon, as we know it (he is credited as the first distiller to age his whiskey in charred oak barrels). Elijah Craig 12 years old was considered by many as a brand with high quality to value ratio, yet in 2016 Heaven Hill decided to replace it with Small Batch expression due to inventory shortage. According to the distillery statement, the new version is made from batches of up to 200 barrels and is a vatting of bourbons aged from 8 to 12 years (technically it is 8 years old). Elijah Craig’s bourbon is distilled from mash of 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley.

Nose: signature bourbon aromas, vanilla, caramel, honey, apples, peaches, trial mix, touch of mint and toasted oak.

Palate: pretty smooth, vanilla, honey, crème brûlée, cornflakes, nutmeg, dash of pepper, roasted almonds, oak and fading hint of smoke.

Finish: pretty long, oaky and nutty, with notes of vanilla, dried fruit and dash of nutmeg.
