Auchentoshan 1966, 31 years old, Individual Cask Bottling / 47,5%/ 0,7l – Auchentoshan is the only Scottish distillery doing 100% triple distillation. The distillery was founded in 1823 and since 1984 has been owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers, now part of Beam Suntory. In the late 1990s Morrison Bowmore released several single cask bottlings of Auchentoshan, as part of the Official Distillery Archive range. The one presented here comes form a hogshead # 801 filled on March 14, 1966 when the distillery was owned by J.& R. Tennant Brewers and bottled at natural strength of 47.5% abv after 31 yeas of aging. From time to time we hear that Lowland malts are not suitable for extended maturation; well, this expression entirely contradicts such theory.
Nose: beautifully balanced aromas of pears, apricots, gooseberries, wild flowers, vanilla, milk chocolate, hints of coconut flakes, nutmeg, pepper and oak.
Palate: almost perfect balance between citrus, vanilla and honey sweetness and oakiness; with raisins, chocolate, nougat and hints of spice supplementing the palate.
Finish: fairly long, classy, with oaky and nutty notes dominating fruitiness and vanilla sweetness.
