Deanston 2008, 9 years old Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Matured /58,7% – Deanston is a medium size distillery with annual output close to 3 million liters of spirit. It was established in 1966 on site formerly hosted a cotton mill. The company claims that the meter-thick stone walls of the distillery’s warehouse help create the perfect conditions to ensure a smooth, even maturation all year round. Deanston has been a major component of Scottish Leader, a blend with annual sales north of 6 million bottles. The distillery is owned by Burn Stewart Distillers, which has been controlled by South African Distell Group since 2013. Deanston 2008 is one of the most unique expressions from the distillery. The whisky spent 9 years in ex-Bordeaux red wine casks and was bottled at natural strength of 58.7% abv with an outrun of 1400 bottles.
Nose: fruity and winey, plums, strawberries, cherries, milk chocolate, vanilla, crème brûlée, honey, dash of pepper and hint of furniture polish.
Palate: fruity with distinctive herbal notes, black cherries, raspberries, black currants, raisins, honey, cocoa, hints of tobacco and oak.
Finish: pretty long, red fruit, chocolate, mixed spice and oak.
