Fettercairn 12 years old / 40% / – Fettercairn Distillery was built in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay and is reckoned to be the second distillery to be licensed under Excise Act (the first one was Glenlivet).
Fettercairn is equipped with two pairs of stills capable of distilling 3.2 million liters of spirit per annum however currently the distillery operates at roughly 75% of its capacity. Since 1973 the distillery has been owned by Whyte & Mackay and primarily supplies malt for the company blends with just a fraction being bottled as single malt. In the summer of 2018 however, the distillery launched a new range featuring four expressions – 12, 28, 40 and 50 years old. The youngest one was aged exclusively in ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 40% abv.
Nose: smooth and fruity, spring meadow, apples, peaches, pineapples, vanilla, milk chocolate, roasted peanuts and delicate herbal and oaky notes.
Palate: light, orange peel, ripe apples, vanilla custard, sponge cake, candied ginger, bunch of garden herbs, cloves, dash of pepper and oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of vanilla, toffee, orchard fruit, ginger, oak and touch of mint.
