Caledonian 39 years old (D.1976, B.2015) Signatory Vintage 51,9% – Caledonian Distillery operated in Edinburgh from 1855 to 1988. In the late 19th Century it was the biggest distillery in the United Kingdom producing around 10 million liters of grain spirit annually. The bottlings of Caledonian single grain have always been extremely rare, almost entire production was “consumed” by blends from the vast portfolio of DCL (and later United Distillers). The 1976 expression was bottled by Signatory Vintage exclusively for the Parisian retailer La Maison du Whisky. It contains whisky aged in a single hogshead no. 900002 for 39 years and bottled on August 24, 2015 at natural strength of 51.9% abv with an outrun of 217 bottles.
Nose: pretty fresh, fruity and grassy, lemons, oranges, peaches, notes of beeswax, vanilla and ginger and traces of oak.
Palate: smooth and fruity, Mirabelle plums, gooseberries, peaches, lemon grass, vanilla, pepper and nutmeg, walnuts and pretty strong oaky notes.
Finish: pretty long, with initial fruity and vanilla sweetness, soon overshadowed by oaky dryness and delicate herbal notes.
