Glenrothes Peated Cask Reserve / 40%Peated Cask is the latest addition (2016) to the Glenrothes Cask Reserve range. The distillery does not use peated malt but in that case experimented with maturation in casks, which previously held Islay whisky. The source of the casks has not been revealed (rumor has it is Laphroaig) and according to the distillery website “the idea was to reflect a time in the distillery’s history when it formed an association with the Islay Distillery Company in 1887”. (We remember that the part of that formation was Bunnahabhain Distillery.) Glenrothes Peated Cask Reserve is bottled without age statement, however “selected whisky from the vintage 1992 were finished in Islay casks just to add a kiss of peat smoke to the distillery style”.
Nose: sweet with a fading hint of smoke, toffee, vanilla, apples, coconut shavings, walnuts, nutmeg and touch of leather.
Palate: follows the nose, apples, candied lemon and orange peel, vanilla, milk chocolate, coconut and subtle smoky notes.
Finish: medium long and pretty spicy with notes of vanilla and a touch of peat
