Hibiki 21 years old / 43% – Hibiki is a blended whisky from Japanese conglomerate Suntory. The brand was introduced in 1989 and in the last decade got a lot of attention. In 2015, at the 20th International Sprit Challenge, Hibiki 21 years old scored top Trophy Award in the blended whisky category for the third consecutive time, being described as “particularly outstanding product”. The whisky is a blend of single malts from Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries aged in American, European and Japanese oak and grain whisky from Chita distillery (all owned by Suntory). The word “hibiki” translates from Japanese to “resonance” or “echo”.
Nose: sweet with pretty strong sherry statement, sugar coated nuts, caramel, maple syrup, bunch of dried flowers, dried tropical fruits and a whiff of smoke.
Palate: very smooth, chocolate coated cherries, caramel, vanilla custard, buttered toast, hints of cinnamon, oak and distant peat smoke.
Finish: long and fruity with a touch of spice and a fading hints of smoke.
