Springbank 14 years old Port Wood / 52,8% – In 2002 Springbank Distillery launched Wood Expressions, a unique range of its single malt whiskies (Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn) aged in various types of wood and bottled at natural strength. The whiskies included in the range were either matured solely in the particular wood type or underwent several years long finishing maturation. Here we have an interesting example; whisky distilled in 1989 spent 12 years in refill sherry casks and additional 2 years in fresh port pipes. Bottled in September 2004 at natural strength of 52.8% abv with an outrun of 7200 bottles.
Nose: winey and fruity, black cherries, plums, raspberries, milk chocolate, vanilla, shortbread, roasted nuts, hints of leather and oak.
Palate: quite spirity, oranges, cherries, raisins, prunes, burnt toast, candied ginger, nutmeg and delicate oaky notes.
Finish: medium long, pretty spicy, with notes of milk chocolate and oak.
