Glenfiddich Grand Cru 23 years old /40% / – In the fall of 2019 Glenfiddich Distillery launched Grand Cru expression, first in the new ‘Grand’ range, that will continue with second and third releases in 2020. The whisky has been matured in American oak barrels and a small number of ex-sherry casks for 23 years before being finished for up to six months in “French oak cuvee casks, which have been used in fermenting the wine that will eventually become Champagne”. The distillery does not reveal where the cuvee casks were sourced from; the majority of Champagne producers use stainless steel tanks for primary fermentation of their wines yet a handful of them such as Veuve Clicquot, Krug or Bollinger use oak casks, which add creamy, vanilla characteristics to the final product.
