Highland Park Dark Origins/ 46,8% – Dark Origins pays tribute to the early days of Highland Park Distillery and its founder Magnus Eunson, who used quite a few ‘dark’ tricks to smuggle his illicit whisky and stay ahead of excise officers. As the story goes, Magnus was a preacher by day and a whisky maker and bootlegger by night, famous for hiding whisky in the pews of his church to avoid tax collection. Dark Origins was created using twice as much first fill sherry casks than the 12 years old – 80%, of which two thirds were European oak. The whisky debuted in 2014 and according to the distillery will be phased out in the summer of 2017.
Nose: quite strong sherry statement, raisins, cherries, chocolate-coated hazelnuts, roasted almonds, oak and a whiff of peat smoke.
Palate: surprisingly peaty and smoky, dark chocolate, apricots, black cherries, bitter orange marmalade, pepper, licorice, touches of tobacco and oak.
Finish: pretty long, smoky and herbal with notes of dark chocolate, prunes and oak.
