Jameson, The Whisky Makers Series – In 2016 Jameson Distillery completely rearranged its product range. Some old expressions were repackaged (Crested Ten into Crested), some phased out (Jameson 12 years old) and the new ones were added. The big news was an introduction of the Whiskey Makers range containing three expressions developed by Head Distiller, Head Cooper and Head Blender.
Jameson Distiller’s Safe / 43% – commemorates the craft of Brian Nation, the company Head Distiller and his mastery of the Irish Pot Still. Spirit safe is a small, box-shaped device allowing to sample what is going on inside the still, a confirmation of quality at every turn. Distiller’s Safe is a blend of grain and pot still whiskeys; being the youngest in the range, it is the one closest to the new make. It was matured solely in ex-bourbon barrels.
Nose: light and smooth, green apples, pears, vanilla, buttered toast, lemon peel and touch of hay.
Palate: light and malty, breakfast cereals, apples, pears, vanilla, butterscotch, lemon pepper, touch of cinnamon and delicate grassy notes.
Finish: short and sweet with notes of cotton candy and marshmallows.
Jameson Cooper’s Croze / 43% – has been created by Ger Buckley, the company Head Cooper, who expresses great respect for wood ‘a cask may be an inanimate object, yet it has a personality – it’s a living, breathing organism’. Jameson Cooper’s Croze is a blend of grain and pot still whiskeys aged from 12 to 16 years in first and second fill ex-bourbon casks with small percentage of virgin oak and ex-sherry casks. Croze is a traditional coopering tool that cuts the groove at each end of the cask to allow the head to be fitted tightly.
Nose: rich, honey, vanilla, toffee, raisins, cantaloupe, dried apricots, hints of cinnamon and delicate earthy and oaky notes.
Palate: sweet and soft, honey, toffee, caramel, vanilla cream, dried mango and apricots, pepper, nutmeg and oak.
Finish: medium long, spicy and oaky with hints of caramel and honey.
Jameson Blender’s Dog / 43% – has been created by Billy Leighton, the company Head Blender. ‘I wanted the Jameson signature present – he stated – the balance of sweetness, light perfumed notes and spices. They all had to be there”. In his creation Billy used three distillate styles, four cask types and ages ranging between 5 and 12 years. The name of the whiskey refers to a small container attached to the chain and used for extracting samples from maturing casks.
Nose: expertly balanced, honey, butterscotch, raisins, candied orange peel, apples, dates, cinnamon and hints of dried rose petals and oak.
Palate: well balanced, milk chocolate, toffee, caramel, pears, apricots, cinnamon, nutmeg, hints of licorice and tobacco and toasted oak.
Finish: medium long, lovely balance of honey sweetness, spice, oak and subtle fruitiness.
