New whiskey for tasting in Wroclaw
Connemara Turf Mór / 46 % – Connemara, the only Irish peated whiskey, is produced at Cooley Distillery, since 2012 part of Beam Suntory. While standard expressions are distilled from barley malted to specification of 20 ppm phenols, Connemara Turf Mór (Gaelic for ‘Big Peat’ is a heavily peated version distilled from malt with phenols’ content over 50 ppm (which is higher than Laphroaig or Lagavulin). It was introduced in the fall of 2016 as part of Travel Retail range. This young whiskey was matured in ex-bourbon casks and is best described as “Islay meets Ireland” as it combines smoky taste of Islay malts with delicate and citrusy characteristics of Cooley malt.
Nose: peat smoke and charred oak, vanilla, caramel, orange and lemon peel, ginger and smoked bacon.
Palate: smoky and sweet, vanilla, brown sugar, breakfast cereals, touch of honey, candied citrus peel, pepper and bunch of dried herbs.
Finish: pretty long, peaty and smoky, with notes of malted barley, vanilla and oak.
