The Macallan 1962, 15 years old Fine & Rare / 44,1%/ – The Macallan Fine & Rare Collection is a series of individual vintages dating from the 1920s to the 1990s. The Collection was launched in 2002 with a little over 20 bottles, the oldest being 1926 Vintage, and each year a small number of bottles is added; currently the number exceeds 60. Each bottle clearly displays the year of distillation and is logged and traced from the distillery. Macallan Fine & Rare Collection keeps setting record prices on auctions and it looks like only sky is the limit. In 2014 the collection composed of 40 bottles with vintages from 1937 to 1972 sold for $430,000 in New York while in December 2016 a series dating from 1937 to 1990 sold to an Asian collector for $500,000. In October 2019 Sotheby’s auction house announced sale of Macallan 1926 for almost 1.9 million dollars (the expectation was about 1/3 of that price), while the most extensive Fine & Rare series spanning from 1926 to 1991 fetched 6.6 million dollars.
Macallan 1962 presented here might be the oddest addition to the series. The whisky was originally bottled for an overseas market as 15 years old in the mid 1970s then it was re-bottled in 2009 as part of Fine & Rare Collection. Only 141 bottles were released. Needless to say we cannot share our tasting notes by we can all use our imagination…
