Iwai Mars Tradition / 40%/ – Iwai whisky is produced at Shinsu Mars Distillery located in Miyada, in Nagano Prefecture. The distillery is owned by the Hombo family, who obtain a license to distill whisky in 1948 (the distillery has been operating in current location since 1985). The Iwai brand is named after Kiichiro Iwai, who in the 1960s worked for the family as a whisky consultant and later distiller. Iwai Tradition is a blend of 25% corn whisky and 75% malt whisky (of which a little proportion was peated) aged in ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and ex-wine casks. Shinsu Mars Distillery sits at 798 meters above sea level, what makes it Japan’s highest distillery.
Nose: fruity with delicate malty notes, cherries, prunes, raisins, bananas, caramel, dash of cinnamon and fading hint of peat.
Palate: sweet and spicy, milk chocolate, honey, prunes, pepper, touch of ginger, a drop of barbecue sauce and delicate oaky bitterness.
Finish: medium long, with notes of caramel, toasted cereals, pepper and charred oak.
