New irish whiskey for tasting in Warsaw

Midleton Very Rare 2021 Release /40%/ – Midleton Very Rare is a super-premium Irish blended whiskey released annually in limited quantities (usually only 50 casks are bottled). It was introduced in 1984 and the early bottlings contained spirit distilled in the original Old Midleton Distillery, which ceased operations in 1975. The whisky doesn’t carry age destination but according to the company statement no component younger than 12 years is being used and some are considerably older, aged over 20 years. The label indicates the year of bottling, not the year of distillation. The 38th edition of Midleton Very Rare was created by Kevin O’Gorman and launched in the spring of 2021; it is a vatting of whiskeys aged exclusively in lightly charred American oak barrels from 15 to 36 years. (Producer’s note.)

Nose: opens with a delicate floral perfume closely followed by roasted coffee beans, salted caramel and honeycomb coming to the fore; hints of nectarines that linger in the background evolve over time along with freshly grated ginger and nutmeg spice.

Taste: baked orchard fruits with a touch of lime zest and kiwi; mild pot still spices continue to build along with soft waves of vanilla, sweet coffee liqueur and cocoa powder; the texture gains additional wood spice with a touch of clove oil and nutmeg.

Finish: lingering finish with pot still spices and soft fruits eventually fading, allowing the oak to have the final say.
